port speed limiting


i'm not sure the exact term so i appoligize if this has been asked before.

i want to limit the upload and download speeds individually on select ports on a server.

server has red hat.. and whm and so forth.


and possibily limit individual IPs up and dl speeds individually.

on FreeBSD you can use ipfw to limit the speed, i believe its doable on redhat using iptables too

man iptables
and read the manual page

There's also a tool that will allow you to do so, it's called shaper (shaperd is the name of the daemon).

odd my red hat box doesn't have shaper or shaperd...

i imagine i'd have to just locate the rpm and install it

i grabbed shaperd doesn't have a man page though.. only manual i've found so far is a foreign translation to english..

kind of hard to follow.


any help would be really great.

and also visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/cbqinit/
you can use tc from the iproute2 package to limit outgoing traffic speed

Well rate limiting isn't really a "n00b thing", you can use fair queueing, class based queueing or simple port/ip limiting.
