I use them for most of my domains. I plan on transferring the rest of my domains to directNIC since I really like them. Top-notch service and they're always trying to improve.

One point to note (and I'm not sure what the impact is) - they used to be in the OpenSRS program, but as I understand, they're now on their own. Has anybody noticed a change in service (either for better or worse)? Does anybody know why they did this, and how will it affect their service.

My opinion is that they're top-notch. I got burned by a couple of other (high-priced) registrars when I was a real newbie. I then discovered directNIC and have been happier than a pig in, er, well, er, excrement(?) since.

Why? More profitable. They became ICANN-accredited, so instead of reselling OpenSRS names they are selling at the same retail price as before but now paying the same rate that OpenSRS themselves do.

I have about a dozen domains there and have had no problems. When a name that was registered through OpenSRS with DirectNic expires, by the way, you are given an option to move it to DN directly... but only if you renew it with more than a month (I think) to go. In either case you manage the domains with the same interface, which is pretty good.

I realize that profit is the reason. And as usual, that's what worries me. Up till now, I've been very happy with directNIC. I just hope that the change doesn't affect their service.

Of course, there was likely more involved than just profit. There are some limitations when using OpenSRS, and they've had the rare but nonetheless existant technical problem. Anybody has them, but if you have the wherewithall you'd probably rather do it on your own. And reselling for anybody means you follow their rules, obviously, not your own.

In any case, they began selling as an accredited registrar quite a while ago -- maybe six months, if I remember accurately. I haven't heard of any problems, but I also haven't switched any names over from their OpenSRS side. Not for any reason other than that I've never renewed one early enough to do so.

directNIC are cool, i use them and godaddy for tons of my domains you cant go wrong with them.

directNIC actually started selling domains as a registrar in April of 2001, right after the new version of the site was put up.

As for the transfer/renewal thing, if you renew about 10 days before you'll be asked to transfer them to directNIC. So why would you want to do that? To prevent problems with the domain, such as name server creation.

We are adding new features to the site all the time to improve it where we can, by listening to our customers via surveys and prowling the internet looking for where our name pops up.
