What makes a good gift for a...
Guys, what makes a good gift for a new home? A friend of mine is moving to her first and new apartment and I thought of getting her a cool plant for the new place, but just can't decide which one in particular.
I found a gorgeous Orchid (looks something like this: http://www.punaohanaflowershawaii.co...chid-plant.jpg ), but initially I planned for something that has more green on it.
Any suggestions?

I forgot the name of the plant I will search for the name.. it looks very nice their is two colors you can choose from a purple on one side and green on the other, or just pure green.
It has long vines and it is very nice for decorating. They stay out of your way, and brings in a special feeling when looking at it. They are very cheap as well.

I would go for a painting - less maintenance.

I think a plant is a great idea! I like the one you picked out too.

Torith, Orchid is more expensive then a Bamboo I picked in the beginning, but I agree - its more decorative, effective and does not require light and lots of maintenance.
Boris, interesting idea - what kind of a painting can I get for a 21-year old female?
Best,

I know. I was just sharing the ideas I had for plants to get, at the same time pointing out a fact that Orchids are not that cheap.
Best,

Unless my last name is Claus, I would rather stick with something simple and more warm than electronics. But thanks.

Art,
We've been in the same situation a few times in the past 4-6 month's.
The perfect gift?
We found a family portrait freelancer that specialises in such cases. The last 4 people we knew that bought new houses, we gave them a gift certificate to have the photographer come to their house and take pictures of the family in the new home.
There's nothing like a good family portrait when you enter a home, especially as it's a gift that will always be around.

Art, have you considered giving her something that she actually needs? Plants and paintings are nice and all, but I would find out if there is any kind of minor appliance or whatever... I am guessing she is either moving from her parents or from an apartment an most likely has a small amount of things for her new place...

You can give her a bonzai plant. I have a few in my house and they are quite interesting as a hobby and as a home decoration. Right now I am playing around with a banyan tree bonzai with its arial roots dangling from the branches. Its still very young but a mature banyan tree is really beautiful. There is one near my city which is spread over a few acres. The arial roots keep the branches fixed rooted to the ground and it keeps spreading on and on.
Also there is another interesting plant: Cicad. The species is supposed to be from the dinosaur ages and no animals eats the leaves it since it is poisonous for animals. The growth is slow and a set of new leaves are born once in a year. But its a sturdy plant and even grows into a full size tree by the time your great great grandchildren are born. In apperance it looks like a tiny palm tree and doesnt flower.

Will she have her own garden or are you looking at indoor plants?

Here are some suggestions.
1) Plant - Bamboo. it is considered as a very good gift by Chinese.
2) Some nice painting. Or as you are on WHT, I assume you are her tech friend. So you might as well buy her a good , thin LCD screen which she can hang on her wall. Attach it to the computer and she can change the painting according to her mood.
3) Some good book. As this is her first home and she is 21 you could give her a good book on starting her new life.
I wish you luck. Buying gifts for friends is one of the toughest things.
Amar
P.S. You could even consider giving her lots of love. It is free and a cool way to say you care...
