Video streaming

I am looking at offering video streaming but would like some input as to what works good. I run linux and will not be changing or using a windows system.

I have looked at the darwin streaming server, but it only supports quicktime files and I want to offer more. I have also seen the helix server for streaming RAM files, but it is rather expensive.

FFmpeg has a server BUT as of right now it does not support streaming from files.

VLC can stream but it requires VLC be downloaded by the client.

I have searched around a bit but not really found anything of use, does anybody have something else that works good to stream. I would prefer free of course I am interested in streaming just about any video format, as of right now the only feasible format I have found is MOV with the darwin server.

TIA for any suggestions.

Ok I was looking at the docs and it said that streaming from a file is not possible. Looks like I will have to set it up and see if the docs are just old.
