Can this number be true?

Yesterday I received volume 1 No 2 of the "Web Host Industry Review" . It is their foray into a print magazine. There is an article entitled "You may already be a reseller". On page 22 there is an interesting quote:
Quote:
...Ensim's research indicates there are 44 million Web Hosting companies in the US alone, a stunning number when you consider how operators like.....
That's a lot of competition!

Greetings:

Webhosting.info reports close to 22,000 in the U.S.

However, like all census data, they may miss a lot of companies since they go by name servers.

So yes, I could believe the number is in the millions.

Thank you.

I was reading that last night and it seemed kind of far fetched. 44 million? sheesh.

wht has 76,310 registered members as of today. If that represented only a fraction of the hosting companies then I could see it reaching into the million + mark but not 44. The interesting question is what is the right number and how can it be measured?

Heh... Pretty hard to believe. It'd be interested to see how they defined "web hosting companies." It probably includes companies just hosting their own web sites, for example.

Hobbes' Internet Timeline reports 171 million "Internet hosts" as of January 2003. Basically "hosts" in that context means computers with a registered IP address; it's basically the number of A records. So not all of those machines are even part of the world wide web -- but this number from WHIR would mean that there are a third as many hosting companies as there are functioning IP addresses.

Bottom line as far as I'm concerned: it's wrong, if by "hosting companies" they mean the same thing we'd mean here.

I find this hard to believe as well That would mean that we probably all would not have a job as this would be over-kill

Actually as I think about it, this might be what happened: perhaps 44 million of the 171 million Internet hosts are in the US. "Ensim's research," as mentioned in the article, may have reported that number, and someone (the author of the piece, or someone else who then passed the inaccurate number on) may have misinterpreted "Internet hosts" to mean the same thing as "hosting companies."

Talking

explains the multitude of cheap hosting though....
From Netcraft.....
Quote:
Only sites found by the Web Server Survey will be included. The number of hosts found worldwide running internet web sites by the Web Server Survey is large [over 40 million in April 2003], but is not exhaustive

Perhaps more than 22,000, but not 44 million. That's way too much.

That quote is saying that there are 40 million web servers, not hosting companies.

As I said above, someone is confusing "hosts" as in, as the above says "[machines] running internet web sites," with "hosting companies."

* netcraft

I added the netcraft quote to show how strange the number quoted was. (just clarifying that I knew what the netcraft number referred to)
