Very simply questions about maintaining a server

Hello everyone, could you tell me exactly how I keep up to date with all of the latest security fixes? Do I have to periodically check the websites such as redhat, cpanel, etc and manually update everything everytime a new version is out? If so, would you be so kind to tell me exactly how to upgrade? Thanks

with cPanel, it will show you a notice in WHM, if you need to do something. However, you can signup wit some security sites like securityfocus. they will have security holes update everyday. you can check and see if you need to do anything with your server.

Ok, yes in WHM it doesnt always show if I need a security update that is why I ask. So how do I go about upgrading? Does it provide instructions on how to do so?

usually, it will show you how to do in WHM. Or sometimes, you will need to do in SSH. Just read documentation of software needed to upgrade, you can do it

up2date can help in keeping everything updated on redhat servers.
However, it is a good idea to read some security related sites regularly as well.

Hi Lexington

In many cases if you have a managed server then companies will do atleast the basic management of your servers.....like keeping hardware and os upto date so you might wanna look at that first...As far as updates are concerned hey if it an't brook don't take the risk...unless its is a security fix

There is a whole bunch of sites on the web that talk about updates/upgrades/patches and forthcomming products...its just a matter on staying on top of these things

BTW: Good 2 See Ya again
Good Luck

Greetings:

Notes: on up2date / yum:

1. Most control panels have a list of what not to automatically update. Know the list.

2. Kernel upgrades do require a reboot for them to be put into effect.

If you use any method of auto update, AND don't know the kernel has been updated, you could be on a vulnerable kernel for a long period of time.

Thank you.

CPanel often tells you when kernel needs to be updated.
