website loading real slow but load is low

Hi guys,

I have a server: P4 2.66GHz, 2GB RAM, 2X80GB HD.

Recently, users complaining about the server running slow (slow browsing) but the load is low and we could not find out any problem with it.

We aren't use swap, in WHM, apache status shows 4-5 requests/s, which is low. Peak would be 10-15 requests/s.

Oh yes, it is on 100mbit port and tried few speed test and looked fine.

Any idea what could be the problem?

Have you tried traceroutes to and from the users in question. There might be a problem with your outgoing bandwidth.

I have heard there are some scripts that try and load apache up to check how it is performing, maybe try something like that. There might be some problem with your current apache compile.

Outgoing bandwidth seems good. This is reported by few users (from norway, US, Asia and for me too!)

Upload speed is fine...

have your tried checking harddrive speed with hdparm? You might only be on halfduplex on your nic aswell.

# /sbin/hdparm -Tt /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 0.30 seconds =426.67 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.20 seconds = 53.33 MB/sec

Is this fine?

Ours is:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 1876 MB in 2.00 seconds = 938.00 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 154 MB in 3.00 seconds = 51.33 MB/sec

load average: 0.28, 0.20, 0.12

----------------------

We are having similar issue, and it looks like mysql issue on our end.

Hello,
Is there only problem with slow browsing? Are all sites on server report slow browsing or only few report ?
I would recommend you get the optimiztion report check on sites which are slow.
Check http://websiteoptimization.com ..they have good report on slow sites and it's free..
If the sites are having heavy graphics get image optimization done...
Or if this is all done then check your BW usage, try analysing the load ,trafiic with ntop etc to check whether anything consuming the BW or not

what happens if you browse some of the sites locally? log in and try "time wget slowsite.com" (I do that on all servers and pipe it to mrtg) - if that's fast then you have a network/dns problem.
