As the subject says. I have a domain ( lets call it thedomain.com ) registered with an expensive registrar. I have two nameservers ( ns1.thedomain.com, ns2.thedomain.com ) registered and they are active ( used as NS by my clients domains ). Now I am considering transfering thedomain.com to Dotster.

Has anyone tried it? Will my registered ns information stay intact?

I was curious about this as well so I tranferred a couple of domains that did not have active web sites... first.
Yes the DNS that you have with the original Registrar holds.
As you probably know after the transfer you can log in to your account and change the DNS.

I'd just successfully transfered my domain from Netsol to 000domains. Yup, you carry the nameservers as you transfer the name.

Well I am not sure if you are answering my question or if there is a misunderstanding. The crux is

ns1.thedomain.com and
ns2.thedomain.com

are my own nameservers running on my own machines. That is I have registered my own name servers with my registrar.

Now I want to transfer thedomain.com.

Hi,
if what you are trying to do is "Transfer from one Registrar to another", NSI to Dotster for example, your current DNS and IP's will stay the same...they will "hold". After you have made the "Registrar Transfer" you can change the DNS and IP's if you want to by logging in to your account with Dotster.

If you are selling domain names using Dotster your customers new accounts will have the DNS and IP that you stipulate in your account settings.

Hmm I don't think you are on the same page...

Here is what he did, as an example...
Registered a domain name, xxx.com with for example ns1.zzz.com and ns2.zzz.com

then registered nameservers, ns1.xxx.com and ns2.xxx.com

now if he were to transfer the domain xxx.com we know ns1.zzz.com will follow, but will the seperatly registered nameservers follow also?

My guess is you only register nameservers once and never have to worry about it again. But I would like to know if that is 100% true.

Everything gets dumped in the registry. If you transfer a domain that has nameservers, this won't be affected. Put another way...

well I am all confused now...the only way I know how to answer this is:
in your Registrars whois results you have a Domain Name= xxx.com. Along with the domain name xxx.com are 2 nameservers.

When transferring a domain name from one Registrar to another Registrar whatever nameservers are "attached" or associated to that domain name at the time you do the transfer, stays the same... stays with the domain name that you are transferring Registrars with. This includes the IPs associated with the nameservers.

This is different form transferring a domain from one Host to another, where in which case you may have to edit the nameservers as well as the IP's depending on the situation.

This is for a Registrar transfer using Dotster.

I have initiated the transfer so I guess we will see in a few days... Will post an update here when I know.

Transfer done. And I can confirm - my registered nameservers still were registered after the transfer.

This is from directNIC's FAQ...

Q: Will my nameserver associated with the domain be transferred over together with my domain?

A: No. Although the domain will be transferred over to directNIC, the nameserver associated with the domain will not. If you want to modify the nameserver, you have to contact your original registrar.

However, you can delete that nameserver record with your original registrar and then recreate them in your directNIC account. This involves a 48-hour propagation time.
