What is the different types of SSL cert's
Just looking at Registerfly.com and their good rate on registrastion of domain names. I wanted to pick someone that could give me SSL certificate too.
Does anybody know why some cert's are so cheap and others are not. I mean for the above mentioned they have a geotrust that is more expensive (like $99) and then they have their regular $25 ssl. Both are 128bit. Is it the amount of background checking they do, I mean in 5 minutes what different can they do.
Just want to get one that makes my customer feel secure but if the $25 ssl does the same thing I guess I would get it.

I think the 99.00 is the "premium" cert offered by Geotrust(retail $200+) and the 24.99 is a lower end product offered by Geotrust at 24.99. In theory they function the same, I think the real reason for the price points is one is a "Cadillac" whereas the other is more like a Buick. Both achieve the same objective yet are perceived quite differently.

So for my customer trying to send secure data. Both would be just as secure?

How about a secure form. Do I have to have a ssl account to send a secure form. And if so , does anybody have any scripts they can suggest that would encrypt a form and send it over email. I have a manual credit card machine. If I could get my customers cc info over an email and feel good that it was not in the clear anywhere, I could start off like this and go to an automated method later.

I just installed InstantSSL's free trial which is 30 days by the Comodo Group. I got all the information within 1/2 hours time and it was quick and easy to install I'm probably going to go with their InstantSSL Pro which is $69/yr. The regular InstantSSL goes for $49/yr. You can view their products at: http://www.instantssl.com . They even offer a free cert for securing E-mail (personal use only though), worth a look?!
GoDaddy is offering GeoTrust SSL's for $49.95 or something, I believe.
Good luck!

Email is not secure. The SSL cert only works between the browser & the server.
To secure the form, you would need to use some type of PGP: http://www.pgp.com/vspform.html or I did see this the other day: http://www.xramp.com/xrampssl/emailcert/index.asp - just have not had too much time to read a lot about it

this is facinating, thanks. i had no idea that there were so many different providers, and that they start at such reasonable prices. been reading up on all the various faqs and i think i understand some of the principals now. however there's a lot of disinformation too. for example 'which ssl' is a review site that's actually run by comodo, and they seem to slate GeoTrust. Free SSL however seems to be run by GeoTrust (i was refered to them by RegisterFly) and they talk down Comodo! it's difficult to get any independant info. for example, is GeoTrust really only compatible with about 90% of browsers with their cut-down ssl?
i'll be running a very low volume site and am looking for a reasonably universal certificate. what's the recommendation.
oh and Azn_Chic, do you have a design portfolio online anywhere? thanks

Sorry. But not really, I'm working on getting it all online asap.
:ON TOPIC:
Like my previous post, Comodo has that SSL to secure E-mails! Hmm..
As for the battle of the SSL's, I guess it's like McDonalds & Burger King or Microsoft and Mac Although I own both Windows based machine and Mac, so choosing is just in the preference I guess. True though the pop up may be annoying and play with a consumers emotions but I noticed with a lot of well known sites I get the secure pop up message so I don't think it's such a big deal as long as the lock is there!

I would probably used ChainedSSL myself. You can look at the EV1 website to get it for $20

If you want that SSL from EV1 then just click on their banner add here on WHT. Or go to their website EV1Servers.net

cool, i found the site. it's a bit thin on info though. is 'chained' ssl a type of certificate, or just the name of the company that supplies it? there's no comprehensive list of compatible browsers or any kind of statistical info either.
why would you recommend this over one of the other similarly priced ssls? does it have any specific selling point or anything that I've missed? thanks again for the help.
i'm sure choosing an ssl isn't going to be one of the most important decisions I have to make, but i'd still like to get it right
