on hold by Network Solutions

For the domains that are put on hold by Network Solutions, how long will it be on hold?

Untill they decide to release it.

ICANN has no policy on releasing expired domains.

NSI evaluates expired domains using some method that only they understand, and then they either drop it or sell it at their whim.

I would never again register a domain with NSI if only because of the way they treat expired domains. They don't own them - they only represent the leasing of a domain while it's active.

It's very frustrating. What's even worse though is that other Domain Registrars are now joing NSI in their practice of treating domains registered through them as property they can do with what they will upon expiration.

It's time for ICANN to adopt a formal policy on domain expiration.

If you care, go to ICANN and complain.

Aww hell

So what does one do when NSol decides to charge your credit card repeatedly then drops your domain after two months (while saying that after 5PMEST changes will be made to the WhoIS the entire 2 months)...

Yeah - domain is gone... the domain was picked up and is being whored out to the highest bidder...

I'm not so upset that they charged me repeatedly... I am upset they failed to keep *my* domain active.

Network Solutions

I'm transferring all my domains to OpenSRS. I have no faith in NetSol.

My personal domain expired on 15-Jun-2001 - I'm still waiting so I can pick it up. It was previously registered with a free name service.
I spoke to the netsol customer service and the reply I got was simply "whenever the registry service decides to drop it - its an automated service - there is nothing we can do".

I'm curious. Why did you let it expire? You do know that you might miss it now when it does drop. Why not simply transfer it to another registrar?

You sound like you have a good legal position here - though I am not a lawyer.

If they charged your credit card, you have documentation.

I would put together the documentation and contact a real lawyer if you can't get anyone's attention. Mine will write a letter in a situation like this for $50. He will help me determine the damages we are after; return of the domain name, $10,000 for lost time, etc.

Threaten to sue them for 100x the amount of your loss and get their attention.

Or just walk away because they are big and scary. Your choice.

It was registered free of charge by NameZero - they use their details and hence they own the name. Sometime after it was registered they 'changed their plans' so if you want to keep the domain with them then you have to pay some hosting plan thing. They do not reply to my emails about releasing or transferring the domain.

So the easiest option is to let it expire - hopefully sometime soon - and then re-register it. The domain is simply my personal name (firstname lastname .com) so I doubt that anyone else would want to register it – it’s not a common name.

nameZero

nameZero is notorious about not releasing domains back into the pool quickly

You need to complain to ICANN at icann.org. They are the only ones who can resove this issue.
