only .cc left....

If you REALLY liked a certain domain which you wanted to use for a hosting site but the domain was already registered under .net & .com extension so i can only register is under .cc.....would you still register it?...if you really really like that domain? I guess that would be stupid, eh?

If the other domains are currently used for a web hosting business I would not take that domain. The would resolve in confusion. There are lots of other domains still available....

I think the other domain is going to be used for a hosting site...but it was registered a year ago. I tried contacting the owner to see if he would sell if i made him an offer. But he never responds. He still hasn`t put the name to use. I really like that domain.

:(

I don`t know about "alot of good ones still left"...i`ve been trying to find a good one for two months...they are ALL taken.

What about the .net domain, same guy?

You don't see a lot of .CC domains. It could work for you if the other domains are not being used. If you are the first one, I guess it would be OK. I would then try to get the other extentions in the future

Yeah

The same guy registered .net & .com...and he registered it almost a year ago and still hasn`t put it to use! Couldn`t i like trademark the .cc domain and then he would be in violation of my trademark and would have to release the two other domains hehheh...i wish.

Oh wait stupid question, a .cc & .com & .net extensions are all the same basically right? They all work the same, no differece except looks, right?

No, but time is an important factor. If you can prove that your started a hosting company earlier than he did, you would be OK for the use of that name. He can not make a claim on a name he does not use, even though it is registered.

I think it is a shame that people register all kinds on domain names and don't put them to use, but that a whole new topic

Exactly. Achieving name recognition is driven by the desire to be unique. A different TLD isn't enough.

Assuming one could get away with it, as an example I wonder how effective verio.cc would be?

So he wouldn`t be in violation of my trademark then and i couldn`t make him release the 2 other extensions? That jerk what a waste of a good name. How could i prove that i got my hosting site up before him though? Register the fictisious business name?

alchiba, so i guess you say it ain`t a good idea.

Remember, even when you have a "right" you might not get it. To make him release its domains you would have to go to court and that takes time.... and money...... Might not be feasible.

You can take the chance... but I would choose a different name.

First off, IANAL.

Secondly, I believe if you trademarked the .cc it would only apply to the .cc name.

Thirdly, I firmly believe in fighting only the fights I really want to win. How deep are your pockets? I assume you're not at the level of Coca-Cola, AT&T or even Enron. It's really all about money, you know.

ENIC (.cc registry) is now owned by Verisign and comes under their DRP so itys just like having a .com as far as disputes are concerned.

I think that ICANN's domain dispute policy says that you need to have the trademark on the name before the other person registered it in order to get the domain name in a dispute under their policies.

The other option is suing.

Anyway, isn't .biz better than .cc?
