Gentoo and Control Panels

Are we the only webhosting company out there or are there more companies moving over to Gentoo distro for hosting.

We have choosen gentoo after reviewing many of the opensource distros and found gentoo to be the most stable, easy to update (security and version) and extremely fast seeing as we can compile everything from source.

However I noticed there are no web control panels out there that support Gentoo. This amazes me and my colleges. We are using
Bind 9.x apache-2 mysql-4 php-4 qmail-1.03 vpopmail (can also be vmailmgr) courierimap and proftpd (and also awstats)

But there is no control panel out there that is supported. Or maybe have I missed one ?

Thanks for any help

Well gentoo I don't think has been around long enough like RH and all the other distro's which is why there are no control panels around.

I believe cpanel is starting to develop something for gentoo however.

Let me know how gentoo works out. I thought it was primarly used for gaming purposes but if it works good, i wouldnt mind trying it out. =)

Same thing with Slackware. This doesn't matter to us, though. The way I see it, if you are concerned enough about OS stability to stay away from Redhat, then you should also be concerned enough about CP security/stability to stay away from almost all commercial hosting control panels.

Set aside a few months and write your own

Yeah I agree on the security of most control panels. I have tried many and there are always backdoors.

I have also contacted cPanel and they do not have any plans to start using gentoo in the future.

Guess I am going to start to build my own control panel. Gentoo is working well actually for hosting. I notice a 30 % speed difference between Redhat and my own installation. Besides most time with Mandrake Redhat it was almost impossible to install upgrades past what they supported. What I mean here is if Redhat installation supported Apache 2.0.1 it would not be easy to rebuild it to apache 2.0.50. With gentoo one command and it is done. (always good to have a test server though)

You can always use Webmin if the server is for non commercial use.
