? does the o/s server act only as a host for my web site & i log in through my existing server
?does my existing server have access to my information i am transfering to the o/s server

OK, your existing server is at your house? do you use it like your personal computer?
If its that way you should not have any problems using cuteFTP and upload your files. The os doesn't matter as long as you can conect via FTP.
Just use the domain name of your web site or IP address, and log in using your username and password.

Well FTP will work any where in the world same. If you are not sure just download ws_FTP or Cute_FTP from download.com. All you need is domain name of your web site or IP address, username and password. After you log in it will be drag and drop for you existing files it is that simple.

Unless you use some sort of protection/restricted access procedure, anyone who might guess the file name can view your files.

In some cases some sorts of server set up will even display the contents of folders for all to see, just by them loging on to your domain.

If your files are at all large, when you transfer them you "may" atract the atention of your internet provider, or the owner or technical support dept of your hosting provider. It is VERY unlikely anyone else would be interested.

I may be wrong but I think what sillybilly meant by his current 'server' is actually 'internet service provider'. sillybilly , if by 'cable modem' you meant the service by Bigpond or Optus, then yes it is ISP. (Yeah me in oz too. )

sillybilly, ISP and Web Host are two different things. You join ISP to connect to the internet (from home in this case). Most of them offer free webspace where you can put your webpages as bonus. For example, Bigpond and Optus.

Hosts (the paid ones we have advertised on WHT) are where you pay another service (completely independent with ISP) to put your webpages.

After you register with a Host, they will send you the details on how to upload your file (e.g. ftp address, user login name, and password). Enter the details on your preferred FTP program. Basically upload them like you did with the space given by the ISP. They work (almost) exactly the same. If you've successfully made and upload your pages on Bigpond or Optus, do the same thing. Just change the ftp address, login name, and password.

Almost forgot, after you uploaded the pages yes they can be viewed by everyone. Assuming they're written correct (as plain text, html, php, asp, etc). If you're worried that the ISP can spy on you during FTP the transfer then don't worry, they can't. (Hmm I wonder if NSA monitoring this.)

Oh and hi to everyone.

About the security thing... if your really interested, investigate SSL (Secure Socket Layers) ftp clients and web hosts that support them. This may be a little extra piece of mind, since data sent between these types of connections are encrypted and rather hard to break on the fly, unless someone intercepts a key or forgets to delete the entropy information used to create a certificate/key.

I copy files from home in Australia to/from www.linode.com with servers located in Texas.

I mainly use rsync, but ftp & wget are viable alternatives.
Rsync allows you restart if there has been an interruption.

there is no difference other than support may not speak your language. All you need is a good FTP program, try "wsftp" it's free and works fine.

but understand that ftp is not a secure protocal, so anyone can have the files you are transfering if they are geek enough
