Web Hosting in a different country

What are the advantages and disadvantages in web hosting in a different country to yours?
The ability of web hosting in another country, certainly gives you a wide choice, but is it the right choice? And will you experience problems?
I would like to hear from those who have already had this experience as well as those knowledgeable and experienced.

Obviously targeting local is best as you've got local knowledge. Asian Internet users are spiraling at exponential rates - while attractive, I don't have much knowledge of those markets.

Well, for one thing, if you want to cater to the foreign market, you would need to have REAL 24 hours service as people there are from another time zone.

It is also good to have a partner there, that can speak their language etc. for a more personalized approach.

Depends on your target audience, for eg, if you have users in Asia and say USA, no harm having a server in say HK or Singapore and USA. Access speed faster in that particular segment. Prob is always support. If u cant reach your server, normally u will need to be an expert at controlling it remotely or pay a handsome sum for managed server support.

Thanks to you all for your valuable input.
What are the legal complications, if any?
