[advice] Do I really need a CP with W2K3?

    Hi everyone,

Here is the scenario: I am planning to get a Dedicated server to run 1 major website/forum. I plan to host 2-4 additional people ot help cover some of the costs. So the total amount of people hosted would be no more than 5.

Do you think I really need a Control Panel for this? What are some features I will be missing out on? The only features I can think of are the ability to easily add people (i.e. adding mail accounts, MySQL accounts easily, etc.)

Any advice at all is really appreciated!

    Thank you for reading,

    BC

Just out of interest but why are you planning to use W2K3 Server as opposed to a linux alternative ?

I'm not sure why the original poster wants Windows, but the reason why I'm in the market for W2K3 Web Edition is because of Remote Desktop and because I'm more familiar with Windows.

    Ah ok.

Well there are several free control panels available for W2K3 server which you could try out and see if theyre what you need. Obviously they dont compare to the Plesks and Ensims of this world, but if you're only after it for a few small accounts, it could be just what your looking for.

A control panel is only good for transferring "control" to your members. It adds an extra level of complexity, and can sometimes not be worth the wile.

You should just probably set up your own accounts in IIS, FTP, etc, and use a web-based email adminstration program such as MailEnable or SmarterMail to allow your clients to do their own email administration.

Things like DNS, etc, don't really need to be changed often, and for a hand full of sites, you will be OK. However, if you are wishing to run a hand full of sites and are thinking of entering the shared hosting business, a CP is a necessity.
