I don't want to burst your bubble, but you're gonna need a lot of cash to compete against the big boys. GameSpy, GameSpot, IGN, etc. The small sites just aren't worth the effort.

Consider this. If the source of your future content is from any of these other sites, then don't even bother with it. A lot of small sites out there just steal the content from the big boys and throw up a bunch of affiliate ads hoping someone will pre-order a couple games from them.

If you really want to build a game site, concentrate on a single game that is popular, or will be popular for a long time. Build a forum to get repeat visitors, and go from there.

I agree as gaming sites are pretty competitive and I normally go to gamespot, but if you want to tackle it try a forum to start off and slowly get new features and articles and so on to bring more to the site and you might be able to get a good attempt at a top gaming site.

Thats true. Try to find some games that are extremely popular online games they tend to get lots of people. As charmed said, a forum would definitely be good as a starting tool.

Some games to watch out for: Halo 2, Starcraft: Ghost

Dedicatedwoman, I might be able to help you with this in an indirect sort of way. I do not really want to explain it here but PM me if you are interested. Have a very big project ( I guess) launching that might suit you and/or your site.

Drop me a PM or mail to james /at/ warofthering /dot/ net if you are interested.

James

You also have to stick with it, through thick and thin, to get beyond the average, run of the mill site. If you have anything I can do, send me an AIM at addictivepcs .

Make a Utopia site or something, or Halo would be good, but I am not into Halo. Try and get a really popular game that is on every system, for example Doom although I don't know about it being very popular, but there are versions for all sorts of game systems.

There are already many Halo sites so that may not be a good game to feature.
