I have a prospect that wants me to develop website with online shopping. I haven't done this kind of commercial project before (online shopping), so I'm kind of unsure how much should I charge this client for building an online shopping website. I'm based in Australia. I'm thinking to use OsCommerce for the shopping cart.
Is AU$500 too cheap or too expensive or is it ok?
Any thoughts/experience that anyone wants to share on this plz?
How long is it going to take you? 5 hours? Then you are making $100AU an hour. If it is going to take you 20 hours, that is $25AU an hour. It boils down to - how much do you consider your time to be worth?
If you are not really familiar with it - you might want to wait & review osCommerce before handing out the quote. It might not be worth your time or you might think it is too much for you to handle.
Let me put it this way - I never forget one IT project that we bid out on contract awhile back. We had quotes ranging from $500 to $10,000... all for the very same specs!
So I think not only do you need to figure out what your time is worth (or what you are willing to work for)... I think you also need to take into account the market you are targeting. If they are small businesses, their budget will be smaller.
If they are large corporations, you may actually be underpricing yourself OUT of getting certain sales as their expectation of budget will be a lot higher in many cases.

To be honest, I haven't used Oscommerce at all.
what I heard from people is that Oscommerce is the best solution to go for anyone who wants to build ecommerce website without much php/mysql programming required.
I do know php/mysql from basic to almost intermediate level (i guess). I'm more into design. So that's the reason I choose Oscommerce. Well, as you suggest, I better start looking at Oscommerce and play around with it while waiting for my client's reply.
By the way, do you have rough estimation of how long will it take for a webdesigner like me to setup ecommerce website using Oscommerce?
From what I've known about this client so far is that he owns a company (Ptd Ltd), he just came back to Australia from his business trip to America last week. So I suppose he's got some money to spend for the ecommerce website project.
I've also seen people recommending Zen-Cart. But is it available in the Fantastico of CPANEL? I see that Oscommerce can be installed through Fantastico very easily, and the very good thing is Oscommerce is more widely used, and they've got a big forum too to support oscommerce users.
Do you have in mind more specifically what are the trade offs between oscommerce and zencart?
