What does everyone think the future will hold for smaller Web hosts in a few years? Hopefully most consumers will have 5mbps up/down broadband connections (preferably via fiber). Servers of the future will patch and secure themselves and be much easier to setup and manage. However, what will this mean for the small Web hosts out there today?
Should they be looking into other avenues or ignore coming trends? Does anyone think that things will become so easy one day that the average user (read: n00b) could just setup their own server and most of the small Web hosts would be out of business? What would your ideal server be? Just some things to think about. Any comments?
I didn't say that servers will never need any human interaction, but they will certainly be more automated. Go do a search on "self healing networks." I'll do a search for other similar posts here like you suggested.
Here in the UK we already have the technical capability to offer 8Mb ADSL, & with two lines & some bonding hardware that could easily become 8Mb SDSL.
Armed with this there will always be those that will host sites with their toy operating systems & inadequate internet servers, but those who need reliable hosting will still go to those that know how it's done properly
