Why somesites do not work without typing "www" before their domain names, and othersites do?
There's 2 possible cause. One is that the DNS does not have a record for www. Another would be that the virtual directory setup in Apache did not include www.

I think the OP was asking about the opposite case. You need an A record on your DNS servers for domain.com (the syntax is '@' in BIND, if "domain.com." is the origin) and you need to list domain.com as a ServerAlias in your Apache config.
