my account is due for renewal and although I like my current host and could really do without the hassle I may have to change hosts (because the current host doesn't offer all the services I need).
This is my first ever website and I have no clue what's involved. How do I transfer my domain name (registration for which came free with the current hosting package and is also due) What about my phpBB forum. What about the scripts that I've installed etc etc.
For your domain you will have to ask your current host to either let you transfer the domain, or give you login details to change what is called your "DNS".
That is the settings for where your domain points to - At the minute it is set to point to a server your current host owns.
For transferring everything else, I think the easiest way for you might be to just get all files from your current host - including your sql files (This is the database for phpBB and your other scripts)
Then just either import the databases yourself with your new host, or you could ask the new host to do that for you.
Then upload all your site and script files and it should work fine
There are other ways to move over databases but this would be easiest for you
I'm a bit in the same situation that u (I Was with 5starhosting.co.uk but they've been down for a couple of weeks now and As a result half my site stopped fonctioning, even things as simple as formmail.cgi, etc!!! phone's dead, e-mail fails, user 10Dimension is keeping quiet... no wonder...)
Back to the subject.
What's your host? How long have you been with them? What is it they can't offer that you need?
As far as I'm concerned, I need internet FTP mainly.
Something stable and reliable for a change!
I'm with ipowerweb at the moment and the problem is that, due to spam and viruses, they have had to reduce the number of emails you can send per hour to 150. I have tried various workarounds but now my newsletter isn't getting out to most of my 1200 subscribers. Without the newsletter my website is pretty much dead.
Otherwise I have been happy with them, very little downtime (so far as I've noticed) and generally responsive tech support.
drummer are you using cPanel for your control panel with your current host? If you do and choose a new host with cpanel your move can be done in a matter of minutes. Most host will do it for FREE if you ask.
