recommendations, please!

I've just about decided to go with UnitedHosting.co.uk for my website (a weblog, plus portfolio and resume); their Bronze plan (200MB diskspace, 5GB transfer, $8 monthly) specifically.

But before I go ahead and sign up, I'd like to hear from you guys if you can recommend any alternatives, which support these (to me) crucial features (crucial but ubiquitous features, such as PHP, not listed):

* SSH access.
* .htaccess and mod_rewrite
* Multiple, preferably unlimited, mysql databases and subdomains.
* Backup/restore functionality
* Host will install additional perl modules free of charge

Nice, but not crucial:

* Easily and swiftly upgradable to other plans
* Python, Ruby support
* Several different web statistics

Note that I'm looking for recommendations, thus the Host Quote thing won't suffice.

UnitedHosting offers what seems to be a really great service, but in my opinion they lack in the following areas, which is why I'm interested in hearing about alternatives:

* Statistics packages. Webalizer is not enough. Urchin, Analog and Awstats statistics please!
* Python, Ruby support.

Most hosts can do all that, except perl modules...You might want to look a little bit more..

Id say perl modules and SSH access will be a challenge - especially in a shared environment - the rest of your requirements seem reasonable -

Unitedhosting has a great reputaion - so, I dont think you can go wrong with that decision - best of luck in your search

Many hosts will offer SSH access, some Python support, some multiple domains and mysql databases, some offers multiple statistics packages.

The problem, however, is that very few offers all of these things while still having a good reputation as being a reliable host. I have found precisely zero hosts which meets all of these requirements.

UnitedHosting is the provider which matches my criteria best, failing only to offer Python support and multiple statistics packages, while still having a very good reputation as a reliable host.

If anyone can point one out to me which I've somehow managed to miss, please do.

UnitedHosting is a good choice..they are in the new private racks, solid choice, they ran into some bumps in the road over the past few months but new accounts on the new servers are great

They use ensim though....

Before you do that, take a look and talk with someone at UltraUnix (http://www.ultraunix.net/). I've been with them for about an year and I can tell you, they're far the best host I ever had and they have everithing you may need!

That's a good recommendation

I have heard lots of good things from unitedhosting. The request to install perl modules is not a big deal to me. SSH if you get it that's cool but a lot of hosts do not allow SSH. I know before I give somebody SSH access I get to know then better and require driver's license for identification and so on. SSH is a big security risk but then again is allowing a user on a server. Good luck with your search but I think you picked a good one. Personally I have not used there service but I have been around WHT for a couple of years.

They seem nice, too bad they don't offer SSH access.
