We are starting a 2nd business, and there is a domain name available that we really like, short and with keyword, and starts like our main business name. However, the .com name is already taken by a big competitor who just uses it as a forwarder to his main domain. We could get the .net name only. Would you take it??
Here a made-up SAMPLE.
Say your current business name is :
and you now could get, for ANOTHER but related business
(and let's assume "equipment" would be a better keyword then in this sample)
but 007-equipment.COM is taken by the competition ...... would you take the .net name as the MAIN business name??
it is not good if you have nearest domain with different company who have the same way of business. I think best way create something unique, because if you have .net domain name you may lost some your customers.
A unique name is probably he best as others say. We had problems this year when Sierra launched War of the Ring the game. They had warofthering.com, which I was unable to get when I setup warofthering.net. Did nto matter at the time as we are not commercial.
But when they opened it I was a bit concerned. They do now out google us on war of the ring and we on warofthering. But we actually got a lot of traffic from it. Plus it co-incided with our busiest period.

how does the .net owner benefit?, if someone uses a .net with the same keyword as a .com domain the most likely benefactor is the .com owner. I wish people would develop names in .net that I have in .com.
can you imagen i have some customers that come and register .NET domain and ignore the available .COM because .net sounds better than the .com (like .net is internet site etc..
Not wanting to be rude but I think this and the stuff about networks and providers just using .net's is a bit pie in the sky folks.
Lots of non-commercial sites will register as .net to project that to their users. Since regardless of how it was all setup to work, its de-facto that people read that into these extensions.
Certainly you are never going to see non-commercial but non-chartity sites register as .orgs. I would feel dishonest registering a .org and using it for sucha site. People think they are charities and foundations etc.
You have to be realistic about how the public view extensions, not how it was set up.
A bit off topic but I think the comments posted were a bit arrogant and unrealistic. No offence.
