I don't think this is possible, however fairly simple php scripts should be able to create a very secure login, too May I ask what is wrong with the standard htaccess method?

It is very much possible, and not hard at all. There is a nice article from good folks at zend that goes in full detail

Well is there a possibility to remove the popup? I have a forum where users login and I would like to let them access htaccess protected areas without having to authenticate through the htaccess and instead check if they are logged in. Is that possible? I've been looking forever and haven't found a solution yet.
