I am trying to figure out how to get it in to google, I submitted via their addurl form... but still nothing almost a month later...
First, check your traffic logs for Googlebot and visitors from google. Just because you don't see yourself indexed, it doesn't mean other people are not.
Also, it takes many months to get Google to spider your site well. I have a 40,000+ page site (different content on each), and it has taken me six months to have 27,000 entries in google (by using the site: search).
It's the ultimate web directory. Google takes entries from dmoz, as do many other search engines.
Because dmoz.org is a non-profit community, your site may not show up in the directory for several months. You just need to be patient.
Google bases it's results on relevancy, and the number of links others have to your site. The rules of search engines always change.
I would avoid using an SEO company. Results vary across the board, but typically SEO companies are a waste of money. Do the grunt work yourself by placing a link to your site in as many places as you can - avoid FFA (Free For All) sites - google hates those.
If you want to get in google get a link from someone already listed. Or get another free subdomain from a site that has a directory of subdomains (so google crawls that). You should get in by the next update unless you're blacklisted or something. This has worked for me with all of my sites. I just link from previous ones and by the next month google and many other search engines have the site in the database.

To get listed and get a PR5? Not at all. Google's spidering heavily these days; it's not uncommon for a site to be listed within a few days, or maybe a couple of weeks. And a PageRank 5 is about average -- it could be achieved by getting only a handful of links.
Don't judge success in search engine optimization/marketing by PageRank. What matters is relevant traffic, and conversions. A PR5 isn't an indicator that you'll get either of those.
I started a fansite 2 weeks ago, and since then ive been getting 10% of my views from google, google literally pickd me up a few days after I put the thing online... im rankd very well on the search already too.
More than likely you are already on google but with a bad rank or not fully spiderd...
