AMD Athlon XP 2800 Vs Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHZ

Saying they are on similar set-up and the same price.
What one is the better one? And what chip would you choose and why?

Are you referring to a P4 2.8 Ghz 533Mhz FSB or 800Mhz FSB?

I'd say the P4 is better. If the AMD is in a mid-tower it may change the results. But if the price is the same, i'd go with the P4 2.8...

Not sure what the casing has to do with it.. But with all things being equal the P4 should be stronger.

Does any one else want to shed some light? The sales person said that they would go with the AMD. I still can't decided.

I think the reason the casing has anything to do with it is that AMD Athelon's run much warmer then P4's The number one problem with rackmounts is keeping them cool, if the processer gets too hot it will chip, which will cause problems. If the AMD was in a tower as opposed to a rack the problem with overheating would be less of a problem and then the AMD might be better.

I'd go with whatever is cheaper. If price is the same, go with the p4.

Also, as to the sales guy saying to go with the AMD. That is obvious because AMD's cost much less for the company so they can make a larger profit. But like I said, if price is same, go with P4.

The heat issue is not quite as severe as you imply. A properly buiilt AMD system will run cool. True they are harder to keep cool and need more attention but there is no reason to put them in a tower. Towers are for the desktop not the DC
