    Alternative for Telnet?

    Hi,

    I have a Domain that still sits on a reseller account that I don't have access to telnet or SSH... I think that there must be a way around this specially when you need to tar files and stuff like that. Does anybody knows a way around perhaps a php or cgi that will allow me to do commands without telnet?

    I've never tried it, but I suppose you could use something like

    PHP Code:
    <?php
    echo "<b>Information From System:</b><br />";
    $v system('tar -zvxf /home/whatever/something.tar.gz'$w);
    echo
    "<hr />";
    echo
    "Output: $v";
    echo
    "<hr />";
    echo
    "Returned: $w";
    ?>
    You could also search hotscripts from a web-based SSH/Telnet script.

    Good luck!

    Check out this PHP "shell" emulation: http://www.gimpster.com/wiki/PhpShell

    Works quite OK for simple tasks...

    If he doesnt have access from the host, we will not be able to use Telnet or SSH.

    Some hosts will not allow system() calls from PHP, so the scripts might not help. I would look into alternative ways, such as manually coding a script to tar a file, as opposed to calling the tar program.

    you could always use backticks

    e.g.

    PHP Code:
    $result = `tar -cvjf args`;
    Gone.
