I frequently visit client sites, and take a closer examination at accounts pushing abnormally large bandwidth amounts for the type of site.

Not hard to spot a warez trafficer - bandwidth numbers are the most telling sign indeed.

I personally won't go around checking unless the customer seems suspicious or the bandwidth usage is out of the norm.

    nickn,

We just view the bandwidth and space usages, and if it's very high, we will check it out.

Or if the client is suspicious as well.

    Good Luck

    Amdac,

We normally do a search for MP3, AVI etc which are banned from our servers. Safer to do this once in a while, but the time they built up traffic or copyright owners start looking for u, will be a little too late : (

I have about 115 clients at present and don't have the time to scan their sites. I am not obligated to delete anything before I know that it is on my server so I don't care unless I get complaints.

    Just curious
I just check my clients' site the 'ol fashion way . I know its time consuming, but its more reliable than using a script since they can modify their files, etc. I just usually pay close attention to any sites that push an abnormal amount of bandwidth.

If I see the bandwidth usage on a server go way up I might poke a little at it but no I don't even try to police content unless it is brought to my attention either by complaints, by bandwidth usage, by cpu usage, or by accident (looking for something else and find warez).

The people at WHN Billing have an abuse pack which does moret then search the server for suspiscious files but it also does spam prevention (Outgoing), and some more features.

I have not tried it yet but plan on doing so. The spam prevention script is built for Exim mail servers.

    Thanks

How do you know there is a mp3 file on your server if its zipped? Do you download the zip file?

Well we do regular updates of the sites ( even member sites )
We do scan through but well when there are hundreds to thousands of members its not 100% accurate.

But still we do pick up some

I've had a free URL redirection page with like 30.000 members and I never checked that for Warez. Like three our four times I got a letter from a lawyer telling me to remove copyrighted content and tell the person's contact information. I deleted the content and told them that I refuse to give the contact info. That was all, never heard from them again.

One day police was knocking at my door telling me I had to contact the largest police agency in my country (similar to the FBI in the USA). I called them and they wanted an IP address of one of my members. I told them I don't have it (which is true). They said: "That's not good" I said: "Well, what can I do..." That's all. Never heard from them either.

So what I'm saying is that checking for inappropriate content is a waste of time. Wait until someone complains. Then do what you have to do: Delete the content - that's all.
