Athlon MP or Xeon
Given the choice, between similar equipped machines, which would you choose? Why would you take one over the other? And, would you not rent one for any reason?

Xeon - Intel always give much better raw performance for servers from their Xeons then AMD's Athlon's. All the MP is is an Athlon XP with multiprocessor support. A Xeon is a Pentium (II, III or IV) but with a lot of server optimizations and larger cache etc...
Besides, who likes a hot server? I like mine nice and cool, like Intel cool█ Xcellweb.net - Quality Web Solutions That Work!

The Intel name has has more brand equity, but may not be the best overall solution.

XEON for 1u servers. For 2u servers or above, Xeon or opteron will be fine.

HOLD ON - Why the hell is everyone going on about Opteron? The thread starter clearly asked about the ATHLON MP (which is merely an Athlon XP, which themselves are very underpowered) not Opteron.

Depends what speed each performance is at. If it's a dual xeon 2.0 ghz versus a dual athlon 2800 (which are chips at about the same price) I'd go AMD.

I'd go with the Opterons even though that's not in your choice.
Out of Xeon or MP i'd go with the Xeons.

I think at least some of your decision would depend on what the application is you are using the servers for.
Understand the AMD's are more or less optimized desktop chips. Lower FSB, Hotter running etc... While the Xeons run cooler and were made specifically for servers.. Brand recognition will also factor in... People like to see the Xeon name.

People like to see the Xeon name.
BUT... I'm not the one renting the machines, and if the market screams Xeon I better try to give them what they wantManagedWay

Today we using this configuration for mirror...
My opinion, is very expensive but very fast for Gaming server.
I have not installed Xeon because it's very expensive here in Europe.CTN1.NET - Hosting Solutions
