Can a broken network card be the cause of this..?

Two days ago one of our servers became unavailable.
After a reboot by the datacenter everything was fine again.

Now today, 48 hours later that same server stopped working again. It would not reboot and the datacenter suspected faulty hardware (network card). They put the harddrives in a new server and off we go again.

Could that same network card problem also have caused the server being unavailable a couple of days ago until it was rebooted or is that a technical impossibility?

Check your server's system logs for errors that will help you find out what happened. You could be having a hard drive failure if server didn't want to reboot.
