anyone have any ideas at all?

    Not sure.

    Try a /sbin/service httpd configtest
then check your conf file to see if the cert path is alright.

the main thing that comes up with the config test is:

    Apache:mod_ssl:Error: Private key not found.
    **Stopped
/etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd start: httpd could not be started

what should i be looking for exactly in the httpd.conf file?

Check permissions on server.crt, as well as checking it exists where apache thinks it does.

this is weird. I just re-installed zend for kicks to see what happens...and it seems to have got apache back up.

but now none of the https urls work. its not even saying page expired. its just saying that they dont exist at all.

how could i wipe out all ssl info..and just set them up from scratch?

You need to read the mod_ssl faq.

...is it just me, or is whm horrible when it comes to ssl?

Were you trying to set ssl cert for a particular account or for CPanel?

If for CPanel , you can login to your http control panel (root acc) and try resetting the ssl sert for it. Then check whether https works or not.

I done it many times via WHM and it worked perfectly. Since you didn't detail the steps and what you did, we can't tell what went wrong ie. whether it's a human error or software issue.
