Ok, before this gets to heated, it was a hyperthetical question.
The reason I asked is because we used to rent a machine in the UK about 2 years ago.
It was a p166, with 64mb ram and a 4gb hard drive, and 5gb/month.
We paid £47/month (inc vat).
Partly because we wanted a machine in the UK, but also because we just wanted a machine some of our guys could play with.
One thing that makes me laugh about the US server market, is that the market has got to the point where providers are battling to give potential customers so much, without actually thinking what they need.
Sproket is a great example. I bet they've got loads of $35/month customers. College Students, Kids learning remote linux, small companies, etc.
So to all those $80-250/month server people, I say think about what people are using them for. You might find a whole new marketlaslo.ca

Not only are these excellent learning servers, they make a great off-site dns machine. And if needed, I promise you, these servers could fill a T1 in a hurry.

IMO if you want a server to do testing with, try www.globaldc.com
(Note: I don't have any firsthand experience but I remember seeing a $20 server there a long time ago)
Also, If you want a company to laugh at: www.snohio.net << I live not too far from the datacenter, but I would never host with them: One Connection (Broadwing) and Horrid Bandwidth prices. Hey, Businesses can afford $25 for 2 gb bandwidth so thats how they stay in business (aside from being the only datacenter in East Cincinnatti, Ohio).

XEON 500MHZ
128Meg Ram
9 Gig SCSI HD
Unmetered Bandwidth
29.95 a month
You could get red hat linux, since if you know how to run it, you can basicly use most of the other *nix OS's.

Somewhere in the dedicated servers offer forum is something about a test/learning box for $39/month. I signed up with them, they upgraded me to the following specs for only $49/month.
2GHz Celeron (P4)
512MB RAM
80GB IDE
100GB bandwidth
SuSE Standard Server (or Debian 3.0r2, can't remember)
Usermin/Servermin
$0 Setup!!!!
This is actually now a production box of mine, which is sweet. Aside from the ...control panel... it's a good deal. Anyway, customer service is excellent, highly recommend them. Dunno if they still actually have any more of these $49 servers, but their AIM is servebydesigncom I THINK.C1 Computing - Providing Complete Technology Solutions
