Can ads be removed from pages when leaving Geocities?
It's been several years since I dealt with Geocities, so I'm hoping that someone here has more recent experience with them.
I have a friend who wants to leave Geocities for a different webhost. If he uses FTP to copy all of his Web pages off of Geocities, will his pages still include code that loads Geocities ads? If so, what would be the best way to remove all code that has been added to his pages by Geocities?

He shouldn't have to do anything. The ads are added by the server and do not affect the original documents.

The only thing is... I don't think Geocities will let you use ftp to take stuff out unless you are paying for hosting.

Geocities hasn't offered FTP for free sites for a few years...

I'm not sure about geocities, but I just recently moved a friends site from lycos to my account, and it was filled with lycos ad code, including code that would not display images, no matter where they were set to point. After about 15 minutes per page, removing the code, it finally worked.

My friend told me that he was planning to use FTP to get his files off of Geocities, so hopefully he has FTP access there. If not, I guess maybe I'll end up helping him edit the code of his pages to remove the Geocities stuff from them.
Thanks, everybody!

I have had this as a support question if you are saving your site from Geo , and from not your local copy it will still have the the geo code to call up ads , make sure to check the source and remove the geo code before you upload to a new server.

Wow! So many replies and so much good information!
I sent my friend the URL to this thread, so he can read it all firsthand.
Thanks, again!
