    cd = change directory

    You should avoid root at all costs if you don't know the basic filesystem commands.

    cd /usr

    You might want to do a search on google for "Basic Unix Commands" and use the material from that.

    Or use a book from amazon

    ok.. ill use this as an example.. ur on your computer right.. u goto mycomputer,.. then c: dir.... then there are a bunch of folders in there... is that where root is suposto be located... so u can goto any dir in the harddrive? or is root access only located here i.e. c:/root/ there cuz thats what happend to me.. or does root access mean c:/ so u can go anywhere

    Are you using a windows machine?

    Or just using that as an example for linux, in linux the root folder is cd /root or just cd

    Hope that helps

    Don't type

    rm -rf /
    They are teasing you

    there is no such thing as a C:\ drive, or any drive for that matter on a linux or *nix operating system, the root of the whole system structure is /

    In other words: / is like "My Computer"

    May i ask why you may have happened to drop by webhostingtalk ? is this anything web-hosting related ? just curious

    No, he was right. The kid is a moron. He is new to the linux world (completely new, like just got flushed out of the womb new) and is going to get on the net with his own dedicated server. He has no idea how to secure or harden it, let alone, run it.

    He is a moron and it's moron's like him that come back in two weeks with, "Oh crap, I've been rooted, now what do I do, please its an emergency, i have 1000000 paying customers and my server is down".

    It's one thing to come in here for assistance, it's another thing to take a leap off the empire state building, aiming for a bus load of nuns and then say, "Oh crap, I really can't fly".
