I just typed up a whole message with a screenshot, and it lost it all because it said can not post links when below 5 posts
I totally dont understand dns or name servers, I am a experianced network administrator, web site designer and more, but the technical side of websites is new to me.
I registered tons of domain names with godaddy, and I am happy to use their online dns server, it works fine but I have a server, and would like to use it. anyway, they have a dns fowarding option, but I have got no idea how to use it. the link to the picture is ht tp://18.104.22.168/dns.jpg (i am hoping it will allow me to post it like that!)
anyway, they are currently registered to the parked page nameserver. I have no ida what this means, apart from it all works.
anyway, I really dont understand how to set up my own nameserver because I dont know the first thing. I just need a guide on how to start it up.
also another little problem I have is that my server is hosted on iis. I want to start a forum site, but it is in php. I dont really want to install php to iis so I want to install apache. On dns I can only get it to foward based on ip, and not ports, is there anything I can do install apache and let it run on port 80 on a subdomain, I want forum.site.com
anyway sorry if i am being confusing, but i really need as much help as possible.
First of all your link to image is not working. I removed space from ht tp But Page Not Found error. Any way to setup DNS on windows is easy. I will suggest you to go For MS DNS. Which is FREE and works fine for us. Steps you need to perform are
1) Register Your Name server against two IP's with your domain registrars.
2) Install and start creating zone files for each domain. In MS DNS it is easy, just a wizard like thing. But if you need more information then feel free to buzz me and I will help you in setting up the Zone file.
About your second question of setting up PHP with Apache, it will not be possible to run Apache & IIS on same machine with port 80. May I know why you want PHP on Apache. Why you don't want to get it install with IIS? I don't see any harm in this.
for number 2, it is really just the hasle of it all. but I dont mind doing it, and I probably will now.
anyway, with dns mangement, I really dont know much about it, I simply run it for my network, all as foward lookup zones. I tried setting up dns to the website, but it simply made all computers within the network see it, but no one else.
if you could please give me a detailed explanation of how to do it I would be very greatful. and also what is the diffrence between foward and reverse look up zones?
and the link is ht tp://22.214.171.124:83/dns.jpg But this is a seporate option to nameserver, so I guess I tried the wrong thing. But I would still like to know what this option is/
There is nothing special to do. All is to make sure that you have Live IP on DNS server and you have registered the Name Server with domain registrar. Another thing to make sure is that your DNS server is listening on all IP's.
