Question

newbie in need of help... PLEASE!

hello everyone...

i'm a newbie to the whole creating and running a website scene... i know some of the basic stuff from research however i'm in need of some help on a few particulars... up to this point i've purchased 2-3 domain names.... now i know that the next step is to find webhosting... there are so many and so many offering different stuff...

1. let's say i want to have both of my sites, which will be two completely different types of sites, just for example, carparts.com and music.com, on the webhost i choose... i'm lost when it comes to the addon domain and subdomain part... do i need to have two hosting plans to have them as separate sites? or can i use one webhosting plan?

2. What's the difference between and addon and a subdomain?

3. Unlimited addon domains? what's that mean?

thank you for your time and responses...

It all depends on what your needs are. If you only want one control panel for both domains, just get a normal hosting account with add on domains. If you want each site to have it's own control panel, email filters, web tracking stats and more, then either look at getting two separate accounts, or a reseller account (which would let you have more than just one domain).

2. What's the difference between and addon and a subdomain?
An add on domain is accessible via http://www.domain2.com and http://www.domain1.com/domain2. A sub domain is strictly something like http://yourname.domain1.com. Since you have two domains, you don't want to go the sub domain option, I believe.

It means you can add on any number of domains that your account can handle (FTP space and bandwidth limitations do apply, mind you).

As the previous poster just said, you might want to look at getting a reseller's account, or two separate accounts. Hope this helps a bit.

1. Some hosts will allow you to add domains to your hosting account, so you can have multiple domains under the same account.

2. An addon domain is a domain that has a subdirectory of the main domain as its root directory. A subdomain is a part of a domain. For example site1.yourmaindomain.com. Site1 is a subdomain of yourmaindomain.com. The subdomains also have a subdirectory of the main domain as their root directory.

3. Unlimited addon domains means there is "no" restriction on the number of addon domains you can add to your account.

Different stuff and different prices... Don't get into the "i'll buy the cheapest plan" kind of mood. Be very careful and do your research on each hosting company.

Use the search feature http://www.webhostingtalk.com/search.php?s= to read things that were said about each company you're considering. Also use presale questions to get a feel of the kind of people behind the company.

Happy hosting hunting!

This is very true, there are many different web hosts, all offering different stuff. There is no "Right Host," there is only the host that is right for you.

You should just have one plan, it is totally un-needed to get two seperate plans, and that would just add to the confusion. Just get one plan, however make sure it is slightly bigger - enough to handle all of the sites.

Addon Domains:
http://www.domain1.com
http://www.domain2.com
http://www.domain3.com
etc.

Subdomains:
http://subdomain.domain1.com
http://subdomain.domain2.com
http://subdomain.domain3.com
etc.

You can have an unlimited amount of domains associated with your account. ( http://www.domain1.com , etc.)
