I currently have a server with 1and1 hosting. I need to update my kernel which is running 2.4.25. I want to move to 2.4.31 and add grsecurity. I have read the fact on how to add grsecurity and it seems straight forward. However I tried to update my kernel using up2date and it didnt work. Luckly i know lilo somewhat and was albe to revert to the old kernel. Im very nervous about compiling this thing on my own. Can someone who is very experienced give me a walk thru how to do this or send me a document on how to make sure the kernel update goes over smooth. Im not a total noob to linux or kernel compiles however all of the ones I have done have been on local machines. Any assistance would be greatly apreciated.
PS Even after checking my logs I still dont know why the up2date rpm kernel failed to boot the system
By 2.4.31 you probably meant 2.4.20-31 packaged kernel for RedHat9. In this case, you needn't compile it, it's available for download here: http://updates.redhat.com/9/en/os/i686/
However, if you want to add grsecurity, then yes, you will have to recompile from sources, and then the latest stable available in 2.4 branch is indeed 2.4.26.
