    server opteron vs P4 HT

    Is a single opteron 140 better than P4 2.8HT?

1GB ram, EIDE HD. 1/5 power used for MySQL.

Possibly as its solely designed for servers whereas the Pentium 4 is mainly aimed towards the home markets and does not contain any of the Xeon optimizations

The opterons beat comparable P4 and Xeon systems ESPECIALLY on Linux/Apache/MySQL according to several comparison tests.
Google for opteron xeon pentium webserver performance etc...

What kind of P4 processors does Server Matrix offer? The cheap stripped-down versions?

How can you compare P4 and Opterons ?

Opertrons are meant to compare with Opterons.

If I was going to go for an Opteron or Xeon id go for a dual processor server.

If I want a single processor server I go for an Intel Pentium 4.

Is the opteron built for multiple cpu?
Will one cpu have much less power than dual cpu?

    The P4 E or Prescott is 1Mbs L2, the P4 Extreme is 2Mbs L3 cache.

That being the case, I'd most likely take the Opteron. I just love our dual opteron servers we use.

AMD will be dropping the Opteron pricing "soon" too.

They (AMD) should have done this months ago, and killed Intel Xeons pricing and bought market share, now Intel will be dropping pricing and rolling out new Xeons...sigh, another AMD marketing mistake.

    Opteron any day over a P4 2.8.

Yes the opteron is built for multiple CPU from the start and scales far better than Xeons do, as Xeons use a shared bus, each processor on an SMP Opteron setup has its own bus. Anandtech has a test on multiple CPIU setups in its IT Computing section, well worth reading.
