New to the Dedicated server and have a few questions
ok here goes, i currently have a pretty good host but i have a friend who needs to host her clients sites she currently has about 20, so i told her that i woulod be interested in doing business with her, so i begin to look at gettting a dedicated server, i havent really used a server other than the small file server i have at home that i use to hold backups of my main system, my mp3's, and other stuff. now to connect to my server at home i use remote desktop and everything is great.
would getting a windows server 2003 machine be just like that, where i could connect via remote desktop?
so as i look into this more i remember that currently i administer my websites via cpanel and my rehosting info through WHM, would i loose that feature with a dedicated server
also with cpanel i have fantastico which is great because im developing a post nuke site and all the scripts are there. i dont have any experience with mysql othere than setting up this postnuke site, so i guess over all my issue is what will i gain and what will i loose from getting a dedicated server, will i be able to setup reseller accounts for people, so any little bit of information would be very helpfull. thanks
A Win 2003 machine could be administered through remote desktop or a control panel such as helm.
cPanel/WHM can't run on windows right now, they're porting it but not done yet (you can check on cpanel.net what the current status is)
If you want to keep cPanel/WHM you'd be looking at a *NIX system, but since you already say you don't have experience with MySQL, I guess administering a *NIX box would be a tad too much for you.
Therefore, I think that if you decide to go for a *NIX box, you'd get a fully managed one - for instance with datinix.net (which I have good experience with).
The company you'd get your server with could provide you with cPanel/WHM and you can easily setup (reseller) accounts with that.
ok well, im experienced with windows a little so i would like to stick with that, so is helm my only option for a control panel that mocks cpanel? would i still be able to have the scripts in one place, or would i have to download them since they are free anyway. is there a book on setting up a webhost with windows server. oh would i still admin my sites like with WHM with helm
