is it legal to use some of the small preview-pictures from pictrue-archives? i mean archives like "fotosearch.com". i think it would be cool to use the small preview-pictures (only the "thumbs") from "corbis" etc.
are they for free? the pics are in pretty-small sizes like 90 x 60 pixel - this is more than enough for navigation-buttons.
and there is no "copyright"-info wiritten on them.
Let's put it this way: Say I had an online gallery, and I used thumbnails to preview the pictures. You decided you "liked one of my pictures" but only used the thumbnail. I would still have a problem with that, as it would still be my work you would be ripping off, thumbnail or not.
Here is excerpt from the terms at GettyImages for their comp images:
The Low-Resolution Digital Media may be used in materials for PERSONAL, NONCOMMERCIAL use and TEST or SAMPLE use, including COMPS and LAYOUTS. The Low-Resolution Digital Media may not be used in any final materials distributed inside of your company or any materials distributed outside of your company or to the public, including but not limited to, advertising and marketing materials or any online, broadcast or other electronic distribution system (except that you may transmit comps digitally or electronically to your clients for their review) and may not be distributed, sublicensed or made available for use or distribution separately or individually and no rights may be granted to the Low-Resolution Digital Media.
So for a business, definitely no. For personal use, read the above (the very first part indicates to me Yes, but there might be something in the rest which says No that I am missing). It is best to just e-mail them and ask, can't hurt.
The terms says that you can use the images to fool around with to see if they will look good for your project, but you can not use them on a live site or published material. You will need to buy the photos. After you have bought the photos, you can manipulate them to however you need them.
