New Server for MySQL: RAM Question

I have just added MySQL to a dedicated server and ran some queries. sshd is also being used. When I do a free -m the output is:

total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 1007 722 285 0 80 455
    -/+ buffers/cache: 186 821
    Swap: 2047 0 2047

Why is 722 out of 1G RAM being used if nobody is accessing anything? Is this normal?

Thanks for any info on this.

OK, I just rebooted the server and now there are only 54 MB used (after doing a few more queries). Yesterday I ran a complete MySQL benchmark test and I guess the RAM does not get freed up after being used until a reboot.

the part you read to see how much ram is used and free is

    -/+ buffers/cache: 186 821

you had 821mb of ram free. If my memory serves me correct.

Linux will cache ram, making it appear used but it really isent, one way to tell if you need ram is if the server is swaping alot, that would be a symptom of lack of ram.
