I had at least one host (none of the above) whom's transfer speed would drop significantly beyond somewhere around 3-5 MByte (for files that are larger)

Weird, I get less speed for this than for the servermatrix servers
68 kbyte/s opposed to 75 kbyte/s for the servermatrix URLs listed above

Yeah we had this problem before and a few people tested and found that the one person had a bad route to our server. On one test he could not get over 230K/s and then tested from another server and was able to get 5mbs. Any chance you could send me a traceroute from your test server to that file so I can pass it up and get this route fixed?
Thanks
Jeremy

75 kbyte/s for ALL serveramtrix URLs in this thread
68 kbyte/s for the theplanet link
60 kbyte/s for the managed.com link
90 kbyte/s from my BTN server
All this from a DSL 768 kbps account in Germany. Max possible is about 94 kbyte/s
Hopefully someone can post a EV1servers file...

I also noticed that your link would start up the fastest (101 kbyte/s) of all files posted in this thread, but the speed lasts for only 1-2 seconds, then drops very quickly to about 70 kbyte/s and a little below that

That is odd. The machine is behind 2 firewalls but others have had much better results. That could be why your traceroute is having problems but the throughput should be MUCH better. Thanks for the info I will start digging deeper into this now.
