What has running a webhosting business taught you?

I must admit, it has taught me important tactics for future business goals, and also that time is worth much more than we value it at.

Some people need detailed explanations while others don't .

Okay, listen carefully; because I'm going to type really really fast. For I have ten things to share that I have learned while running a web hosting business.

    1. Some keboards have capital letters only.

    2. Hitting the exclamation point, only once, serves no good purpose.

    3. Calling someone stupid is the best way to get a smart response.

    4. "I can definitly pay you later," means, "Ha ha ha ha."

    5. RTFM stands for "Really Tuff For Me."

    6. Some keyboards display several !!!!!!s whenever the space is hit.

    7. If I demand something be fixed NOW!, it will be fixed fastest.

    8. If I don't know how to work my computer, I can ask a web host.

    9. Providing hosting, costs no money. So, everything given by a paying customer is pure profit.

    10. Patience causes patients.
There is no best host. There is only the host that's best for you.

    Very well said Soft

Here is what I have learned.

    1) Use your time wisely. You only have so much time, be effective during that time.

    2) Treat all clients like your girlfriend. Word of mouth is the biggest advertiser.

    3) Develop a good image of yourself. Unique designs and treat first customers the best.

    4) Have patience when dealing with clients as many need help.

    5) Don't stress. Have a good time doing your job as this is one of the better jobs on the Internet.

    6) Keep track of your clients you manage to get through an organizable fashion.

    7) Listen to people on this forum as it will do you good.

    Just my 2 cents.

    To add on:

    Business is no charity.

I have seen and met many host that are too soft-heartened and get lots of trouble from clients.

Seriously don't deserve all these for their <US$10/mo plans.

Sometimes you just have to discipline your girlfriend if she turns bad. Opps.

    Taught me that

    1) Clients think their webhosts are like Robots who are awaiting their every mail, support ticket and problem like they have nothing else to do in life other than be online 24-7-365/366 including leap year providing them support

    2) Patience

    3) To earn money you have to spend money

    4) Happy customers=word of mouth

Well it has taught me quite a few things too
    1) How to go with out food for months LOL ( just kidding )

Because I hold a free web hosting, email and forums service so money making would be a lot tougher for me But customer handling are much easier

Well this point was always hard to swallow for me.

It doesn't matter if it's a 4 hit a month personal website or a profitable business website, treat each customer with the same respect and patience.

You WILL get those difficult customers. Never, ever, ever take it personally. Walk away, take a deep breath (my personal favourite is to go outside and kick the trashcans).

Some customers are just fussy- and really aren't bad people. Some are nasty pieces of work, you'd never tolerate in real life.

However your methods of dealing with them reflects on your company. The good customers will recommend you far and wide. The nasty ones won't blacken your name, if you don't give them ammo to shoot with.

The second point I would make is never bite off more than you can chew. Don't be afraid to get in extra help- even if God, fobid it costs you!

If you don't, you'll never survive the long hall.

Last point, is think of all the other worse jobs you could be doing. I had ONE job in my life, and hated every minute of it. In comparison, my job as a web host is heaven

    I've learned:

That when my wife says "are you done yet?", she really means "see you in the morning".

Without clients, your business is nothing but a money-pit. Clients are the ladder.

    Compete on value. Not price.

Don't let clients put off payments for too long, they tend to "forget".

    PLAN! PLAN! PLAN!

Know what to do when that plan fails.

If you have a free moment, read something new, even if it's an instruction manual for something you don't even own. Knowledge is power.

Making pyramids out of Mt. Dew cans is an easy way to pass some time on those looooooong nights.

What I realise when I am a web hoster.

    1. Datacenter people actually play table-tennis during work time.

    2. I can call my girl friend accross the land using the datacenter phone .. for FREE

    3. My personal handphone become company handphone.
