    Athlon XP, MP, and Opteron

    Athlon XP, MP, and Opteron

How do AMD processors compare to their Intel counterparts as server procs ? I just noticed Maaged.com has some new server offerings and they are all AMD based servers. Would you recommend them over the Intel packages that Managed.com has ?

As a side note, I am deciding to get my server from Managed so let's not make this topic an issue about whether or not to go with Managed (as I noticed a lot of Managed.com topics tend to go). I just want an opinion of which would be the most suitable for me among Managed's choices.

Basically a comparison between p4 vs xp, opteron vs xeon, etc....

The AMD Athlon XP 2000 runs at 1.67Ghz, the XP 2800 is 2.08Ghz, the MP 2800 is 2.13Ghz, and the Opterons don't have models listed (so I can't give speeds), but Opterons have been shown to outperform Xeons in benchmark tests. Good luck at Managed.com, hope you have a good experience

    Opteron

Opterons perform very well but they are a bit on the expensive side.

Here is a rundown of the models

    [14,24,84]0 1.4 Ghz
    [14,24,84]2 1.6 Ghz
    [14,24,84]4 1.8 Ghz
    [14,24,84]6 2.0 Ghz
    [14,24,84]8 2.0 Ghz

The models beginning in 14 are single processor, the ones beginning in 24 are smp, and the ones beginning with 84 are scalable to 8 way.

    Ex. Opteron 242, Opteron 244, Opteron 248

I believe they are the future

I just checked out the new Athlons at Managed.com... strange the Athlon XP 2800 is more expensive than the P4, considering the Athlon processor is about $100 less than the P4 (at least)...

the reason for the lower price of P4 could be they have a bunch of P4's left over...

An Athlon XP 2800 is $88/month. A P4 2.8 is $90/month.... last time I checked, $88 is still lower than $90. Either way, you shouldn't complain about those prices....

I was comparing it to the actual clock speed; I don't believe that BS about 2800+ being the same as P4 2.8 ghz.

Their Dual Opteron pricing does not look 'cheap'. Why would I go with managed.com for I could get it somewhere else at that price as well?
