    webhositngtalk.com are these guys typosquatting?

    www.webhositngtalk.com

I don't see why anyone would register a domain like this but to have some lost traffic enter there site due to the success of the original www.webhostingtalk.com of which is in the top 700 sites on the net for traffic and popularity... I was just one of the many that typed the domain wrong and found my way to there site full of affilates...

I thought I would bring this to your attension, also is there anything you guys can do about it, or is this totally legit?

seems they have a trademark on it though the term sounds completely generic in nature to me, surprising it would be granted.

so you would be looking for trademarks on the term "webhositngtalk"?

  5. #5
I'm not looking for anything, snoop.

I was just clarifying that the first poster was talking about one name and you brought up a trademark on another name.

I think you need to do some basic reading on trademark law and come back a bit later.

..and I think you need to go back and read this whole thread from the very beginning. I did not start this thread! I have nothing to do with any of these names or any trademarks! All I was doing was trying to point out that you were heading in the wrong direction from your first reply in this thread. Instead of going back and seeing where your mistake was, you for some reason latched onto me and just won't let me go. That is just blind ignorance.

Before you lash out at me again, please go back and read posts 1, 2, 3 - only those 3 posts and in that exact order. What you should have done was, right alongside your trademark quote in post #2, claim that the misspelled domain name was attempting to use the trademarked domain name for own gain. Instead, you were just showing surprise at how any name was trademarked at all and left me with the impression that you had misread the misspelled name in the first post and were defending it by listing the trademark. What I, in turn, was showing in post #3 was that you were defending the wrong name. We were both looking at the same car, but you were describing the front end and I was describing the back end. Very common occurence in written discussions. Usually very comical.

For future reference, snoop, please do not let someone's low post count on a message board lead you to the mistaken belief that you have the right to "talk down" to them. Low post count does not equal low legal experience.

Postmaster, my apologies for having been an unwilling participant in the hijacking of your thread.

Ah yes, completely forgot in all the kerfuffle. Looks like 100% typosquatting to me, no doubt about it. Having said that, typos are a huge business and hardly anyone (besides MicroSoft) ever seems to bother with any legal action.

Well, this has been going on for a long time.

Not just this domain. But, it's pretty common. And, frankly, it perplexes me.

Just seems like a waste of money trying to gain traffic on typos.

Especially when it comes to communities such as WebHostingTalk, where everyone comes in by clicking a link or using their bookmark.

I know it's common. But, I just don't know why.

personally I always type in the domain and I'm fairly sure I have been to that site before, would imagine it is getting some ok traffic.

Prehaps typosquatting on popular keywords would be better, ethically at least.

i type it in everytime as do many people. Typosquatters wouldn't do it if it didn't earn money. Fact of the matter is typos do earn money, John Zucarinni was earning over $1million per year from them. So the incentive should be quite obvious. And to answer your question --are they typosquatting? Yes, they are indeed. Not a lawyer but it appears quite obvious that it is a typo of webhostingtalk.com. Legal/illegal? I am not a lawyer or judge or doman authority and have no right to decide. If WHT really wanted to do something they could go to www.wipo.int and file a UDRP case.

he was arrested and is now in jail for sending people to porn and mouse trapping them. He was especially targetting little kids, you could even speculate the piece of law that got him was created just for him. (something about sending kids to porn sites)

typosquatting is the registration of domains which are typos AND infringe on trademarks, the term squatting implies a lack of legal rights. So if this is obvious typosquatting then you'd be arguing it is illegal.

I think wht should do something about it? Does the admins of the site have any interests in trying to take the domain off them? Im curious about this....

No surprise at all that domian.com is taken and used to promote web hosting/ domain registration services.

And I agree that net41's comment was 100% offensive and inappropriate. Then again, good chance he made it just to get a reaction.

Nah, hes done nothing criminal as far as I'm concerned but just letting the police know would be a good idea, many children suffering under the hands of pedo's and the police have good internet investigation teams..... I might be reading too many papers but its almost like he was advertising it so others of interest would get in contact with him.... Hope at the very least it was just a shocking post that he didn't mean, I don't know any normal human being that thinks like that...

    difficult to attack

I think it is difficult to attack something like this. If we were talking about a brand like Microsoft or such and something sounding like it you might have a better chance.
