Perhaps you have a firewall that is blocking your ping requests. Not sure if that is the problem here but it doesn't hurt to check. Also, make sure your gateway and dns are properly configured. Are you getting permission denied errors or dest. unreachable errors?
I don't have a firewall running on the server, and I don't believe that there is one within the network. I do believe that i have the dns and gateway configured properly, this is what i get when i try to ping google.com
i had a similar issue a couple of days ago after i screwed up my named, i ended up adding "forwarders" in /var/named.conf to forward all unresolved requests to any nameservers in the outside world and it works
replace xx.xx.xx.xx with any known nameserver ip e.g. your data center's nameserver ips, which can be as many as you want, remember to restart named by `service named restart`. then you can try the command `dig domain.com` && `wget domain.com` to see the effect
