Recently one of our clients asked about my opinions of a design company because one of their friends was planning on contracting them out. So I looked over their site looking for possible signs of a scam, when I came across their client list. It started something like this;
Channel 6 news
San Diego Red Cross
American Red Cross
El Cajon Speedway
Needless to say not one of these sites was actually displayed in their portfolio. Ok, so even our company doesn't put everything in our portfolio so I tell them to give me half an hour or so so that I can look into it. Looking into it more, I found about 10 more sites with the same sort of client list. Trying to find any direct linking to the companies, afew were registered by the original company I was checking out, others were not. This 'design company' also has a pretty crappy portfolio to say the least.
Their client list goes on and on, with very well known companies, not just the ones above, but what got me is that there are several other websites that show no direct link to this other site. I personally advised them to look around and named some other reputable design companies (aswell as my own of course ). What do you think about companies like the one mentioned above? Would you trust them?
EDIT: They also claim to be an ISP but don't link to it, or mention it much (no name is given either).

1. Promotes their website, if it's a scam then more people may get scammed.
2. If it's not a scam, then my implication that it is may get me stuck with things I don't want to be.
Just look out for this sort of thing in portfolio's and client lists. And ask for contact addresses to follow up on any given testimonials. One of these said 'companies', I have done work for in the past, and I experienced these problems;
Designed the website with no set price (before I came to ProjectModules Design). I said he can have it for 600$. He said that 'we agreed on 160$'. I denied this (it wasn't true), and he refused to pay. During the process I asked him where he got his testimonials from, he said that they are made up. He then displayed screenshots of my design work in his 'company' portfolio and took credit for it.
Just be careful choosing 'companies' that look to good to be true, and claim to work for every big company across half the world.
This sounds like a company based out of San Diego, as 4 or 5 of those companies are based out of San Diego (I know because I grew up there and visit it quite often). If you could post the name, others could chime in as well, since you're in the UK and the company sounds to be from the US.
