I'm looking to transfer a large group of our site files to a new server and just wanted to see what Linux command and options I should use. I tried running a search to find some common commands, but I couldn't find anything.

tar & sftp also
cd <docroot> ; tar zcf - | ssh <otherserver> 'cd <docroot> ; tar zxf -'
This is better than scp -r in the case where you have symbolic links. Also, it will use more cpu and less bandwidth. If you want to save cpu and use bandwidth, remove the z options.
