Raid
Ok, so I know this must sound like a REALLY newb question, but could someone please explain what RAID is and why everyone always wants RAID on their servers?
Also, why is it so expensive!
And are there any alternatives?
Thanks.

Basically RAID is going to reduce the risk of a drive failure (and drives fail) destroying all your data. The failed drive can be removed and replaced with a new drive. And then the raid array will re-build itself on the new disk using redundant information stored on the other disks.
In some cases RAID will also provide better performance the equivalent single disk (since reads can be spread over multiple disks).RimuHosting.com - VPS Hosting and Dedicated Server Hosting since 2003

Raid is not expensive take Raid 5 only waste only 25% of the disk space yet provide u with security and redundancy. Esp if u combine with hotswap
