Question users of forum with names Mod1 or 1Moderator or Admin1

    Hi,
Some users of my forum are using name like
    Mod1 or 1Moderator or Admin1.
These Users are not Moderators or Administrators.
This is confusing for another Users.

    How I can prevent this?

Put it in your TOS, and change those members names..

If they don't agree to a name change delete them..

Oleks, what forum platform do you use? It depends on my answer.

I've used vBulletin and YaBB SE, and both have disallowed names that cannot be taken by members.

By the sounds of it, though, you're talking about trolls. In which case, just delete all the offending names.

In IPB you can put in names which are reserved and cannot be used by members. Go into you ACP and look for the Banned Names section under Users and Groups and in the area called Banned / Reserved Names enter names and variations of names you wish to reserve/ban from member use.

    Hope that helps you Oleks

I think you can put those names in a box in your admin control panel that will start out certain names, for example add this to your blocked member names list:

mod (Will show ****'s for the whole name)
    admin
    moderator

I am a mod on a site and you can do this on that one also:

In this area you can set certain words that people may not use as their username or display name. Simply input words that you don't want people to use, one per line, in the text area below.

    admin
    mod
    moderators

That site is HERE should anyone care to check it out.......(Just a small little site, nothing fancy (hehehe))

    Hi,
Can I use * as a wildcard in Invision Power Board(R) v1.3.1 Final
ACP > Users and Groups > Ban Settings > Banned Names

    For instance for
    *mod*
    *Mod*
    *adm*
    *Adm*

I guess it is not working or I am doing something wrong.

    Thank you.

Yes you can. And as well use the terms Admin, Moderator instead of usingthe abreviations. Why? What if a person uses a name that is legit but contains the letters mod or adm?? The filter would ban those names as well if you used wildcards. Best to be specific and not have some choked members.

Examples of possible banned wildcard names: Modern, Admiral

Once the member name is created before you add the filter, you have to delete it for the banned names filter to work correctly. Just adding the names to the filter does not delete or remove names already registered. It only blocks new registrations of those names.

Ok, you have to be very cautious about those accounts as those users may be looking for variety of exploits in order to hack your board.

It is a common tactic on some boards.

But as it was suggested, ban the names you don't want people to have: "admin", "mod", etc.
