A bit vague don't you think? Are you just letting us know? Or did you want some help?

Is it a grinding sound? Groaning? Etc.

Without any idea as to what it sounds like, no one can give any suggestions.

    Hammer, case. Hit.

It's probably the PSU fan, those things like to make funky noises as they are on their way out. May have just came loose if your lucky. Also check any case fans you may have.

I have that problem with my CDROM even tho nothing is wrong with it, when the CDROM stops spinning it makes a grinding noise (Nothing is wrong with it - nothing is wrong with the cds) its been like that for like 3 months (When i bought it) I really dont mind it much, im pretty sure your problem is your harddrive tho, i would get a new computer because your harddrive will obviously be dead soon, and backup any important data on that drive you may have.

Yeah, I have a similar problem.

In my case, it's a little heatsink-fan thing on a chipset on the motherboard. And it's glued on and holding on for all its life.

I just let it groan away since it's in the closet.

Someday I'll haveta replace the mobo with a better one.

I say either one of the fans or the hard drive. If it is a fan you can open it up and clean it and that might fix it. If it is the hard drive you will want to replace it soon.

I hear Dell has cheap computers (well not cheap but lower prices). The computer I would by would just to check emails go to forums (no games, but maybe some card games), and maybe a few downloads.

    Best deal around right now?

If you're gonna do that, check the refurbs (the 'outlet'). Better deals there, and you can usually combine them with other deals on their site.

I just got a laptop from dell, pretty decent turnaround and whatnot. Not a refurb tho.

    <edit> here's the outlet:

lol, that works to a certain extend, but seem to make more noise than usual... I'd say just power it off, get a vacum cleaner, clean your fans and try again. If it still makes the sound, then its probably your hdd, get it to repair after you backup everything

One of people in our amatuer radio club had a pc that sounded like the transmission in a 57 Chevy when the floppy drive operated.

    Tor..
dont get a new pc just yet
the main problem that causes grinding noises is dust.
Get an air blaster or a air compressor..
and blast all the fans. Including the ones in your psu.
Your comp will now run cooler and quiter.
